Berlijnplein

This 'makers house' functions as a temporary residence for artists working at and initiating a huge new plaza and festival site called Berlijnplein, part of a newly developed urban district in Utrecht.

Makershuis can adapt to the (yet unclear) plans for a more permanent cultural settlement at the Berlijnplein. It consist of multiple CLT (cross laminated timber) units which can be transported, re-assembled, composed differently and expanded with additional units. Finally, at the end of their lifespan, most materials can be easily separated and for the most part be gobbled up by nature.

The roof of Makershuis is equipped with a water storage system, a special soil mix and different (edible) plants and herbs. Also various eco off-grid solutions were implemented like compost toilets (which run without water) and solar panels.

Its broad wooden surface has been used as a giant canvas by artists Gijs Frieling and Job Wouters.
